Soccer advances to championship game

Kolletta Dorsher
The St. Kate's soccer team won 8-0 over Buena Vista University on the first day of their home tournament. Kolletta Dorsher led the way with three goals for the Wildcats, who have now out-scored their opponents 22-1 on the season.

Megan Gosselin got the scoring started at the 9:42 mark of the game when she fired a pass from Kelsey Nistler beyond the reach of the diving Buena Vista goalkeeper.

There was not another goal for almost fifteen minutes, but that scoring drought ended with a flourish.
Spanning the first and second halves, the Wildcats scored six goals in the next 27 minutes of play.

Three of those goals came off of centering passes from the corner to a streaking Dorsher who slammed the ball into the back of the net each time. Kayla Engel assisted on the first of Dorsher's goals at the 24:58 mark of the game. Dorsher's second and third goals were just over a minute apart, and came thanks in large part to the speed and hustle of Sam Levercom.

In the 49th minute of play, Levercom raced past three defenders to get a sent ball in the corner, after maneuvering by another defender Levercom sent a beautiful crossing pass in front of the net to an awaiting Dorsher. She wasted no time in putting the ball into the back of the net. Ninety seconds later, it was nearly an identical play. Levercom sprinted around the edge and found Dorsher alone in front of the net again, and again she finished it off cleanly go give the Wildcats a 6-0 lead.

Sandwiched between Dorsher's three goals was an unassisted goal by Kaitlin Kramer at the 30:26 mark and Hannah Anderson's first collegiate goal at the 40:25 mark.

First year student-athletes Christina Paik and Kelsey Shearen rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats. For Paik it was her third goal of the season, and the first for Shearen.

Clare Saunders also got into the scoring act, picking up a couple assisting on Anderson and Paik's goals.

The Wildcats will face Clarke College, 13-0 winners over Presentation College, in the championship game of the tournament starting at 11:00 am on St. Kate's field.
